Markies is a very good potato for French fries (chips) and crisps and is in big demand all over Kenya. Processors, hotels and restaurants highly value it for its frying characteristics and taste. Its low sugar level remains for a long time enabling excellent cooking quality.

It is yellow skin potato and late maturing (120 days).

Potato variety Markies

Plant description

Markies is an erect tall variety with white flowers. The variety has good heat tolerance.

Disease resistance/tolerance

A preventative spraying schedule against late blight is necessary even though Markies is only slightly susceptible to this. Markies is early blight sensitive and therefore a good treatment against this is necessary.

Tuber features

  • Large, oval to long oval tubers, uniform in shape
  • Yellow skin
  • Yellow flesh
  • Shallow eyes
  • Good resistance to internal bruising

Planting distance

  • Seed size 1: 20-25cm
  • Seed size 2: 30-35cm
